Name: Charles Lee
Canon: Assassin's Creed III
Dates: 1732 - 1782
Affiliation: British Army, Continental Army, Templars (Grand Master 1781 - 1782)

Allies: Haytham Kenway, Thomas Hickey, John Pitcairn, William Johnson. Formerly Edward Braddock, Benjamin Church
Enemies: Connor Kenway, animosity towards George Washington

Setting: So we all know the evolution story.  And we all know the creation stories.  What if they're both sort of true?  Well in the world of Assassin's Creed they are thanks to magical space wizards known as Those Who Came Before aka Minerva, Juno, Tinia etc - they've got plenty of other names, don't worry.  And what if those space wizards literally made us in their image from  apes using Pieces of Eden that, wouldn't you know, controlled us and made us into willing slaves for them because space wizard logic man.  Only, in honour of every trope ever, the space wizards decided to get it on with their slaves thus creating a lineage that were immune to their magical doodads leading to a whole heap of shit and a war and Adam and Eve of course stole an apple (yeah, some of them are apples of Eden, deal with it) and ran around and yeah things were so not bene.

Then there was a big disaster because if there's one thing humans and space wizards can't be trusted with then it's a planet.  Big cosmic boom, space wizard catfights apparently happened and crazy betrayal and crazier schemes (of course no one learns that until the very last minute ala the rule of drama) and pretty much everyone was royally boned so they decided hey, let's work together.  And so they did.

Then some other shit happened I guess and there were the Assassins who had Eagle Vision because they're the offspring of space wizards and humans and then there were the Templars and they've been fighting basically forever and the Pieces of Eden are everywhere.  Of course they all want the Pieces of Eden because mind control and other crazy powers am I right?  So anyway, both the Assassins and the Templars want one thing - peace.  Only the Templars think we're too damn stupid to accomplish anything so they want to pull a space wizards deal, enslave every mind everywhere and voila, peace.  The Assassins also want peace in all things but they believe in choice.  Obviously this means they're at war but the Templars somehow always seem to have the upper hand meaning they can be behind everything ever including all the huge breakthroughs and write history the way they want.  The Assassins are pretty much violent hippies in communes or cells trying to keep everyone safe via their creed and stabbing Templars.

Oh and all your miracles?  Pieces of Eden.

And many figures in history?  Pieces of Eden.

Anyway, the Assassins and Templars have their pissing contest waging on with sleeper agents and spy shit and all this stuff they never fucking explain properly because it's ubisoft and they kind of stop giving fucks and retcon shit with no mention or warning so they can tie up a storyline the stupid chunks of the fandom hate.  I digress.  Anyway, the Templars have the Assassins on the ropes, the world is going to absolute shit (no more movies, most of the African population is dead, disasters everywhere, insane storms also a solar flare of epic proportions is going to kill us all) and the Templars want to mind control everyone.  So they grab Assassins and throw them in things called an Animus to make them relive ancestral memories through genetic memory (no one cares about the genetic memory, just roll with it for the cool stuff that follows) and look for Pieces of Eden.  Central to all this is Desmond Miles, runaway Assassin because daddy was an emotional distant douchebag who became a bartender (to think, he only wanted to be part of the world) who relives lives and finds Pieces of Eden and gets his face remodelled every five minutes and who saves the world.

Except nope because Desmond decides to not even try to be a saviour and unleashes Juno after the worst cutscene of all time.  And that's pretty much it.

Personality:
HAYTHAM LIKED IT AND HE PUT A RING ON IT THE END.  No, no, I know how this goes.

When Haytham and Charles first meet, Charles is the almost stereotypical British gentleman for a man at such a point in history.  He is well dressed and unerringly polite when he speaks with Haytham, doing his very best to make a good impression although some of that could be due to the fact that he wishes to become a Templar.  Charles is quick to do whatever he can to be of assistance to Haytham be it by procuring rooms and taking care of the bags or kicking down doors and pretending to be an angry citizen to help with a distraction to recruit the right men into the Order.  Indeed, Charles manages to act like a massive fanboy of Haytham, getting annoyed when he feels Haytham is not shown the proper level of respect (LOOKING AT YOU HICKEY) and showing concern over his welfare.  He's smartly dressed and well-groomed, in contrast to how he appears as he ages.

The most positive relationship Charles has is with Haytham Kenway, the man who inducted him into the Templar Order in the first place.  Charles is commanded by Haytham and does what he can to impress himInterestingly, even though Charles has known him for years and with others, such as Thomas Hickey, calling him by his first name, Charles seldom calls Haytham by name.  Prior to joining the Templars he is referred to as Master Kenway and later he calls him sir.  When speaking at Haytham's funeral Charles is noticeably emotional, having to break off for a moment to compose himself when he addresses Connor.

Fast forward several years and that politeness has been replaced by arrogance.  Charles is smug, even when his plans are constantly by foiled by Connor.  Some of the tendencies to jump right in (see kicking in doors) are offset in his earlier days due to Haytham who has a great eye for being meticulous and Charles being wet behind the ears when it comes to his true activities.  Once he's more of his own man, he doesn't think things through as he should, taking rather more liberties.  He dives in and perhaps if he sat back, thought and planned things better then maybe Connor wouldn't have made such neat work of foiling his 'plans'.  It is mentioned by Connor around the time he kills Haytham that Charles is disgraced due to the dog's breakfast he makes of pretty much anything.  A roaring rampage of revenge does very little to fix things, indeed, it's what gets him killed meaning that the Templar Order in America is very questionable as all the key members are dead as Connor recruits and builds his own brotherhood for this new world.

Charles has very little regard for the Mohawk people which could extend to all native peoples.  He calls them savages, comparing them to animals and he has absolutely no problems with assaulting a very young native boy as seen when he chokes a five year old Connor viciously, telling him that he [Connor] and his people are nothing.  Idiots are something Charles cannot abide although that could just be Hickey or class issues as Thomas Hickey certainly talks and acts like he's a peasant; really, who can blame him, not knowing Odysseus indeed.  In terms of pettiness, Charles loathes George Washington due to the fact that Washington was named Commander-in-Chief instead of Charles meaning that plans had to be made to assassinate Washington to help achieve the Templar goals with such efforts involving him trying to discredit Washington and weaken his armies.  Obviously that plan backfired.  As did the plan to kill Connor when he was being marched off to his execution, overseen personally by Charles.

There is a manipulative streak in Charles as he manages to convince Connor's people to ally themselves with the British as well as managing to convince Connor's oldest childhood friend that he had been seduced and turned against his own people.

Charles no doubt felt a strong measure of guilt about Haytham's death, something Charles played a part in from the very beginning from Connor's erroneous beliefs about who killed his mother.  This is what made Connor become an Assassin, taking down the Templars.  Later, when he was involved in the failure that was the Battle of Monmouth as well as others.  Finally, when Haytham sent him away at Fort George during its destruction, it allowed Connor a chance to kill the Grand Master, ultimately destroying the Order even before Connor finally took down Charles.

In the end, Charles really does lose it in rather spectacular and dramatic fashion, seemingly abandoning the Templar ideals to partake in a  personal vendetta; in much the same way as Connor hunted Charles for his supposed part in the murder of Connor's mother, Charles is intent on not only killing Connor but everyone and everything he holds dear, making Connor watch as he does so.  At the very end though Charles faces death with the utmost dignity, he and Connor both severely injured, bleeding heavily and unable to even speak.  They share a drink, Charles gives a shrug and accepts his death.  Then he joins Haytham senpai in the afterlife and all is well.

Skills: le parkour, swords, pistols, muskets, grand speechifying, strangling kiddliewinks, looking good in red, idolising Haytham senpai, being a goddamn English gentleman, looking murderous when fuckwit savage assassins dump bloody good tea in the harbour, not knowing where the hell he is, somehow finding the time to look after nine pomeranians, looking so greasy you can practically smell him through the screen, facing death with dignity like a true Brit, saying lobcock with poise and class, not murdering Hickey because wow Haytham are we really slumming it with this moron?
